Se cuenta la historia de una joven universitaria que acudió de madrugada a su habitación para llevarse algunas de sus cosas antes de volver a marcharse y pasar la noche junto a su novio. Ella entró pero no encendió la luz ya que su compañera estaba durmiendo. Anduvo varios minutos por el cuarto a oscuras buscando algo de ropa y algunos libros, finalmente salió.
Al día siguiente de regresó se encontró a la policía. Le preguntaron si ella vivía allí y contestó que sí, le dejaron pasar y se encuentra en la pared escrita con sangre estas palabras “Suerte que no encendiste la luz”. Su compañera había sido asesinada la noche anterior estando ella en la habitación.
Esta historia cuenta con muchas variantes y se conoce desde hace más de 40 años en EE.UU. El tema es repetitivo y recurrente en colegios y universidades y pretende alertar a los adolescentes de ciertos peligros mundanos que pueden sucederles cuando se apartan de sus obligaciones o infringen ciertas normas. Así, unas veces la protagonista se marcha a dormir con su novio (infringe una norma moral) o a una fiesta cuando al día siguiente tiene un examen (no atiende a sus obligaciones).
